The first edition of the International Exhibition on Extractive and Energy Resources (SIREXE 2024) took place from November 27 to December 2, 2024, at the Parc des Expositions in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The event was held under the theme: “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF EXTRACTIVE AND ENERGY INDUSTRIES: WHAT POLICIES AND STRATEGIES?”
This edition featured several panels and roundtable discussions aimed at exploring best practices for the sustainable development of extractive and energy industries and uncovering innovative solutions to ensure responsible growth in these key sectors.
As part of this event, on behalf of the ALSF, Ms. Mariame-Yolande BAH, Legal Counsel and Regional Coordinator for North and Central Africa, and Ms. Yocoli Grace-Milca KONAN, Legal Counsel, participated in a roundtable discussion held on Friday, November 29, 2024, in the KOSSOU room of the Parc des Expositions in Abidjan. The theme of the session was “engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) Contracts and Capacity Building in Electricity Production: Focus on Arbitration Scenarios.”
During this session, Ms. BAH and Ms. KONAN reiterated the ALSF's mission to assist African governments in negotiating complex commercial contracts in key sectors such as energy, natural resources, extractive industries, infrastructure projects developed through public-private partnerships (PPPs), and sovereign debt.
Specifically addressing arbitration in the energy sector, Ms. BAH and Ms. KONAN emphasized the importance of structuring arbitration clauses in EPC contracts, highlighting mechanisms such as amicable dispute resolution and expert determination procedures.
The roundtable was attended by lawyers, legal representatives from AZITO ÉNERGIE and ATINKOU, as well as representatives of the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ARREC). The session was moderated by Mr. Moussa KONÉ, Director of Energy Regulation and Monitoring at the Directorate General of Energy.
In their closing remarks, the speakers promoted the ALSF Academy and reaffirmed the ALSF's commitment to supporting African states in implementing their projects in the energy and extractive resource sectors. They also expressed gratitude to the event organizers for the invitation to participate in the roundtable and share ALSF’s expertise in the energy sector.
