ALSF supports the Government of Ethiopia to Enhance its Legal Framework for the Extractives Sector

The ALSF successfully concluded a training workshop for officials from the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoMPG) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The capacity building workshop was the culmination of the ALSF support to the Government of Ethiopia involving the strengthening the regulatory framework and the legal and technical capacities of Ethiopian officials in the extractives sector. Six legal experts from the MoMPG benefited from the final training under the project in Johannesburg, South Africa from 28 November to 2 December 2022.

The training facilitated by the ALSF and delivered by ENS Africa, will strengthen the legal and technical capacity of the MoMPG and the Government of Ethiopia in the mining and petroleum sectors. Earlier support provided under the capacity building project included the review and standardisation of key policy, legal and regulatory documents governing the extractive sector and development of mining and petroleum sector management toolkits. With the appropriate tools and enhanced capacity, the Government of Ethiopia expects to manage its mineral and petroleum resources more sustainably, including through fair and balanced contracts and increased benefits to the government and people of Ethiopia.
